Maths

Maths is taught as a discrete subject, daily and in the morning where possible. We use every opportunity available to apply skills learnt in these lessons across other areas of the curriculum.

TBHGS uses White Rose Maths long, medium term and daily plans and teachers are free to adapt these to meet the needs of their class as appropriate.

Each class use the WRM workbooks however children who are more than 3 years behind/SEND will use stage appropriate workbooks and receive Maths intervention through Number Sense delivered by their TA. TAs also use Power of 2 for those children finding recall and retention of basic maths facts challenging.

Each class has manipulatives that children can access when needed e.g. Place value counters and grids, measuring equipment. These are replenished as budget allows

Teachers are expected to teach a 20-minute arithmetic session to develop pupils’ fluency skills. There is no specific format for this and it should focus on the needs of the pupils i.e. what do they need to know to make further progress.

Baseline entry tests are completed at the start of each new unit of learning and repeated at the end (Exit tests) to track short term progress and allow teaching to reflect this. PUMA (Hodder) tests should be administered during assessment week towards the end of each term and be used to identify gaps in learning and reference teacher’s summative assessment. KS1 only complete Exit tests as they may have no prior knowledge of learning areas to apply yet if learning is new. Consolidation lessons should be planned in after each exit test to further address any gaps. Termly times tables tests are administered to each year group from Year 2. Year 2 begin these in Spring term. All KS2 are assessed each term. Year 4 will assess half termly to allow further gap plugging. All year groups are set the simulated MTC on Purple Mash. CLIC tests are administered weekly and their end of term results are recorded on the CLIC tracker termly which shows which step they are currently working on.
