Art and Design
At Bishop Harvey Goodwin School, we expose children to a wide range of artists, time periods and cultures and allow them to discover their own creativity using the power of art.
Art is taught across school through practical experiences. Children are given opportunities to explore a wide range of media and learn different techniques: sculpture, collage, painting, drawing, textiles and printing over the course of key stage 1 and 2.
Lessons provide a progression of skills for each year group to follow. Each year group is introduced to vocabulary and techniques building on previous skills, whilst allowing their individual expression of ideas.
In Early Years, pupils’ development of artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity. From Year 1 children use a sketchbook to record and develop their creative ideas. This allows them the opportunity to reflect, improve and celebrate their work. Children are encouraged to show pride in their own efforts. Where possible, children are given opportunities to exhibit their work to a wider audience. Pupils have worked collaboratively to create installations for our school.
The implementation of this curriculum ensures that when pupils leave The Bishop Harvey Goodwin School they will have developed the ability and skills to express themselves creatively and will have an appreciation of a wide range of artists.
