PSHE
INTENT
This subject plays a vital role in The Bishop Harvey Goodwin School as we enable our children to grow, develop and flourish.
We provide a robust cyclical curriculum for personal and social development from age 3 to 11 and we are fully compliant with the RSE 2020 requirements.
We utilize the JIGSAW programme to build up repeating topics in each year group and the resources help provide lessons which have a familiar pattern and support children’s learning of emotional literacy, mental health, social, moral issues and spiritual development. We selected this comprehensive and mindful program as it helps children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in an ever-changing world.
IMPLEMENTATION
However, we have personalised the PHSE curriculum to our school community and the needs we know our children have. In consultation with staff, children and parents, we have established a wide, full and specific curriculum which highlights and prioritises internet safety, personal development and community support through charity. Events e.g. Remembrance Service and projects e.g. cycle wise are also woven in to ensure a rich and exciting curriculum is offered to each year group.
This curriculum is supported well by other subjects PE, Design and technology, Science and RE all have overlaps Our school values are woven into PHSE and all we do within school and so we commit to distinctive quality lessons alongside appropriate and enriching experiences to support the growth of our children and their readiness to tackle the next stage of their education in a more emotionally mature, socially knowledgable, self-reflective and tolerant way.
IMPACT
We include the protected characteristics, school values and charter and NO OUTSIDERS work into our PHSE work and regularly consult with the school community so we are all supporting our children growth and development though school. As world is more demanding, complex and challenging we have to equip them with the knowledge and skills to cope well. We care that they are open minded, reflective and supportive of their own and others views and this subject supports this. We are aspirational that they flourish in our school and beyond so our commitment to high quality PHSE curriculum underpins this so our children learn fully and achieve well.
