RE
RE at The Bishop Harvey Goodwin School provides opportunities for children to understand what it means to be a religious believer in the world today and helps them to understand how Christian beliefs inspire and underpin the values of the school community that they are a part of.
We wish our pupils to leave our school:
- Knowing about, understanding and responding to the ultimate questions of life and ethical issues
- Inspired to explore, develop and affirm their own faith/world views, spirituality and values
- Respecting the faith, belief and values of others
Our Long Term Planning for R.E. outlines unit titles, covering Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. Learning in each year group is organised into six areas which follow the church’s calendar as well as developing an informed and respectful understanding and breadth of other religions and worldviews.
Medium term plans are a blend of Carlisle Diocesan RE units with ‘Understanding Christianity’ units woven in alongside to support and resource the Diocese materials. These units focus on children’s engagement with religious text, development of theological ideas and broadening of religious vocabulary, with particular reference to the ‘Big Story’ of the Bible. Teaching is centred around a key question, ensuring an emphasis on enquiry-based learning. RE is delivered in ways that make it a lively, active subject by employing a variety of teaching methods; including drama, freeze frames, poetry, art, setting up prayer stations, godly play, senses walk, use of artefacts, pictures and stories.
Taught objectives are assessed at the end of each learning sequence/half term and the outcomes contribute to individual assessment of each child’s RE learning against year group objectives. Each class also captures ‘unseen’ RE in a class reflective journal to gain a broad picture of children’s responses, ideas and the connections they make.
As well as weekly lessons, RE permeates through the curriculum. A half termly values day, NISCU sessions, child-led worship, visits to places of worship, including our unique link to Carlisle Cathedral all enhance aspects of our RE curriculum.
