Modern Foreign Language

INTENT

At the Bishop Harvey Goodwin School, we follow the Rigolo programme as a framework, which is a comprehensive, highly interactive Key Stage 2 French course providing exciting and engaging activities for our pupils, through which children are inspired and excited to learn about new cultures and develop a positive understanding of a multilingual and multicultural world.  We intend to help our children to develop a love of languages and to grow into curious and confident language learners with a strong foundation upon which to build.  Furthermore, we aim to provide a curriculum focussed on purposeful communication which is accessible to all.  Children are given opportunities to express their ideas and thoughts in French, both in written and spoken form.  In Lower KS2, children acquire basic skills and understanding with emphasis placed on speaking and listening skills. These will be embedded and further developed in Upper KS2, alongside Reading and Writing, gradually progressing onto more complex language concepts and greater learner autonomy.

IMPLEMENTATION

We deliver an exciting and relevant French curriculum, with Rigolo at its core, which ensures progression and meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. Lessons are sequenced so that prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of language and grammar are built in. At the beginning of each topic, children are given an opportunity to share previous knowledge and predict what might be covered, further developing vocabulary and confidence to communicate.  Developing communication skills is a fundamental part of this subject and will prepare them for life during formal education and beyond.   Children are encouraged to understand basic instructions/ commands in French and use the target language for requests.  Lessons will incorporate different teaching and learning techniques, pair work, group tasks and individual/independent task thus making the subject accessible to all.

IMPACT

Outcomes will be visible throughout their French Folders. At the end of each lesson and the start of the following one, pupils will share their knowledge enabling gaps to be identified and successes to be celebrated and built upon.  During these recall sessions, attention will be drawn to previous use of similar structures or grammar points in different units consolidating knowledge, understanding and progression and future planning will be impacted.

The impact is measured through the following methods:

  • Observing children speaking and listening in another language.
  • Marking of written work.
  • Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking termly assessments.
  • Interviewing the children about their learning (pupil voice).
